Why do I need a license for AERMOD-HPCS?

AERMOD-HPCS is a proprietary product and is license managed with the Reprise License Manager from Reprise Software, Inc. AERMOD-HPCS will not function without a valid license issued by HiCLAS1. The U.S. EPA cannot issue licenses for those who wish to use AERMOD-HPCS. Back to top of page.

What is the license cost structure?

The price structure is chosen to always be more cost effective than simply buying more hardware.  For AERMOD-HPCS (HPC serial version) licensing does not count CPUs but the number of concurrent users. Pricing starts with the basic unit of a single user license for one user and a quantity discount applied (in steps) for multiple users. Multiple user licenses may be used either on one multi-core/multi-CPU platform, or across multiple platforms on the same network. Back to top of page.

When will AERMOD-HPCS licenses be available for purchase?

At this time (Q3CY07) v1.8 of AERMOD-HPCS has been released and perpetual licenses are available for purchase. Prices are announced on the sales page. Back to top of page.

Is an evaluation license for AERMOD-HPCS available?

An evaluation license is available at no charge, but it is time limited and is restricted to a single user. Evaluation requests should be sent to support@hiclas1.com and must follow the directions in the Installation and Release notes that comes with the AERMOD-HPCS download before an evaluation license is issued. How does a license for AERMOD-HPCS work?

For AERMOD-HPCS (HPC serial version) licensing does not count CPUs but the number of concurrent users. The terminology may seem confusing since it mixes the terms “license” and “licenses” when in reality it is one license with a concurrent user “count”. We have decided on a license structure for the released product that will allow either a node-locked or floating/network license using an approach typical in the software industry. By node locked we mean locked to one machine. By floating we mean the license can be used on either one machine or across multiple machines on the same network. For a floating/network license one machine must act as the license server and be accessible over the network by any machine that wants to checkout a license for AERMOD-HPCS. The license server will manage the license usage and, most importantly, count the number of users who have checked out concurrent use of the product. If, on checkout, the maximum count is reached the next concurrent user will receive a message to that effect and will need to wait for a license to become available. Either of these license types is perpetual with the purchase of the released version and has no expiration date for the serial version series it is purchased for. Back to top of page.

How many licenses do I need to purchase?

There is a difference between waiting two hours versus waiting a week when workload throughput could be increased and have the results be available in half the time (or less). One starting point is to decide to use AERMOD-HPCS for the longest running scenarios. To determine the license count (aka “number of licenses”) first decide how many of these runs could be concurrent. This number will determine the minimal value of "count" that you need on the floating license. If there are more than 2 concurrent users (count is greater than 2), then adding more to the license count boosts throughput and productivity. However, be aware that there is a performance overhead when executing concurrent runs on the same platform, even if it has multiple CPUs (see HPC-2007-3). Additional users may always be accommodated at a later date by the purchase of additional “seats” (i.e. incremented “count”) for the license. In such cases quantity discounts will apply (see the sales page). Promotional offers may also become available from time to time. Back to top of page.
