Why do I need a license for HCTM? HCTM is a proprietary product and is license managed with the Reprise License Manager from Reprise Software, Inc. HCTM will not function without a valid license issued by HiCLAS1. Follow the procedure described in the release notes to obtain a license. Note that the license is a 12 month subscription license and expires on the anniversary date unless it is renewed. Back to top of page. What is the license cost structure? Pricing starts with the basic unit of a node-locked single user license for one user and a quantity discount applied (in steps) for multiple users. Multiple user licenses may be used on one multi-core/multi-CPU platform to service multiple task queues. The quantity discount also applies to multiple licenses purchased for multiple computers, with the quantity determined by the total user count. Back to top of page. When will HCTM licenses be available for purchase? At this time (Q4CY08) HCTM8 v1.0 has been released and licenses are available for purchase. HCTM8 is limited to a maximum of 8 concurrent threads in the thread team allocated to service the task queue for each user. Prices are announced on the sales page. Back to top of page. Is an evaluation license for HCTM available? The evaluation license is available at no charge, but it is time limited to one week and is restricted to a single user. Evaluation requests should be sent to support@hiclas1.com and must follow the directions in the Installation and Release notes that comes with the HCTM download before an evaluation license is issued. For HCTM8 licensing counts the number of concurrent users with each limited to a maximum of 8 concurrent threads in the thread team allocated to service each user's task queue. The terminology may seem confusing since it mixes the terms “license” and “licenses” when in reality it is one license with a concurrent user “count”. We have decided on a license structure for the released product that will allows only a node-locked license using an approach typical in the software industry. By node locked we mean locked to one machine which also hosts the license server to checkout a license for HCTM. The license server will manage the license usage and, most importantly, count the number of users who have checked out concurrent use of the product. If, on checkout, the maximum count is reached the next concurrent user will receive a message to that effect and will need to wait for a license to become available. The license type is limited to 12 months from the date of purchased, after which it expires unless renewed. Back to top of page. How many licenses do I need to purchase? To determine the license count (aka “number of licenses”) first decide how many of tasks could be concurrent on a single computer. This number will determine the minimal value of "count" that you need on the license. For each count of 1 concurrent user, 8 concurrent threads may be utilized and this is sufficient for a computer with 8 cores or fewer. If there are more than 8 cores on the computer you plan to use then consider a 2 concurrent user license, to allow 2 teams, each with a maximum of 8 threads. However, be aware that there is a performance overhead when executing concurrent runs on the same platform, care should be taken to ensure that memory and CPU processing capacity is sufficient for all model tasks that would execute concurrently.
