FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HCTM: HiCLAS1 Task Manager Maximizes Multicore Utilization

Durham, North Carolina, 10th November, 2008

HiPERiSM Consulting, LLC, (Durham, North Carolina) and AS1MET Services (Blanco, Texas), operating together as the HiCLAS1 joint venture, announced today the availability of the HiCLAS1 Task Manager (HCTM) for commodity computing platforms. The current release is for the Microsoft Windows Operating System, with a version for Linux coming in the near term. HCTM functions on multi-core systems as a parallel task-farming work scheduler to maximize multicore utilization with either serial or parallel threaded model code. HCTM will automatically:

bulletschedule tasks from a queue,
bulletexecute them concurrently on multiple cores, and
bulletgenerate run logs to show progress.

HCTM may be used for any model that executes on a commodity platform. In particular it enables concurrent executions of either HiCLAS1's AERMOD-HPCS product, or the U.S. EPA's version of AERMOD, alternate and preferred models, respectively, for regulatory applications in pollution deposition studies with transport distances less than 50 kilometers.

The design of the HCTM product is the result of several observations. One is the widespread use of AERMOD and another is the way in which modelers use commodity processors when they have a production queue of many long running tasks. In the case of AERMOD end users either schedule the tasks manually at the keyboard, or use a vendor software interface that partitions the AERMOD input data stream and applies task farming for each separately spawned task in each data partition. In other cases modelers who do not use vendor software interfaces perform the latter steps manually. The HiCLAS1 approach conflates these ideas into a single product. George Delic, Ph.D., CEO of HiPERiSM Consulting, LLC, said that "we came up with our approach while looking at parallelization of our AERMOD-HPCS product. HCTM schedules concurrent task execution for a user defined task queue, but is not intrusive (i.e. does intrude on the model nor the model data). Furthermore, it is usable with any model, not just AERMOD."

Arney Srackangast, founder of AS1MET Services, said, “HCTM offers the air dispersion modeling community the choice of using either the U.S. EPA's AERMOD 'Preferred' model or the faster HiCLAS1 AERMOD-HPCS version as an 'Alternate' model. Both are serial (single threaded) codes, but when fed to HCTM in a task queue, multicore utilization is maximized. As a result throughput is enhanced regardless of what hardware you currently possess or are planning to purchase.

Obtaining the product is a simple two-step process

bulletDownload the hctm installer package from the downloads page at this site, and
bullet Execute the license extractor application once a license is received from HiCLAS1.

The HCTM product is licensed with an annual (12 month) subscription at a modest cost, as described on the HiCLAS1 sales page. Organizations (or individuals) interested in purchasing the HCTM product should send Email to sales@hiclas1.com. The HCTM product uses the Reprise License Manager (http://www.reprisesoftware.com) for a node-locked, 12 month subscription license that comes with a "quantity" option where "quantity" is the count of concurrent users. In this release (HCTM8) each concurrent user is restricted to processing with, at most, 8 concurrent tasks (or cores). However, for each increment of the user count, a separate task queue may be processed, thereby offering utilization scaling to any number of cores. Evaluation licenses are available, on request, but are limited to a single user count.

About HiPERiSM Consulting, LLC.

HiPERiSM Consulting is privately held and registered with the Secretary of State as a North Carolina Limited Liability Company since 1998, and is a member of the Better Business Bureau of Eastern NC. HiPERiSM specializes in technology transfer to enhance programmer skill levels in OpenMP, MPI and hybrid OpenMP+MPI parallel programming. Specialized courses have sensitized stake-holders in legacy codes to the need for code and performance portability across current and future computer architectures. Current interests include hardware performance metrics, parallel software development, evaluation of compiler performance, portability across parallel computer architectures, and hybrid programming models that match trends in clustered parallel computing. Recent technical studies have utilized proprietary interfaces to hardware performance counters to understand the performance limiting bottle-necks of Air Quality (and other) models.  Customers include Universities, Government Agencies, and Corporations across the USA.
